Into Context, Out of History
Tulsa, Oklahoma
On November 18th at 7:30 PM CT, VotMG will discuss the book, The Nation Must Awake: My Witness to the Tulsa Race Massacre. This seems apropos as we look at the news going on in the world around us and as we look at the happenings in modern Tulsa and the journey the police are making to rebuild community trust. How are the events of the Tulsa Massacre relevant to this? What’s a Biblical approach to this conversation? We hope that the following will provide some insight.
“…there were always Tulsans through the years who helped make it certain that the riot was not forgotten. Both black and white, sometimes working alone but more often working together,”
The First Insight
Reconciliation and healing are not the slaves of dishonesty and secrecy. But it’s often put forward that, by hiding the truth, one becomes the guardian of these entities. The ways in which citizens of Tulsa, “both black and white” came together “throughout the years” to preserve history even as dark a part of history as this was, shows that guardianship of secrecy is not the preservationist of healing. Instead of embracing fear, let’s look at topics like this one and choose to move forward and do the difficult work that comes with reconciliation.
The Second Insight
“…Like Stonewall Jackson of old our boys stood “Like a stone wall…” (similar references seen throughout the book)
Welcome to Book Club
Experience the community present in Book Club with VotMG. In this space, you’ll experience a sense of welcome as you step into the exploration of difficult topics in a spirit of truth and love. In this space, we’ll talk about racism, racial reconciliation, and other topics that will challenge us and equip us to live and walk in community and from a place of authenticity. In these places, Biblical diversity flourishes. We, The Church, are uniquely positioned to be a light and to speak to a world that cries out for answers to these challenges. In Book Club, you’ll also have the opportunity to connect with others who understand this.
